We completely understand your disappointment—when you buy a ready-to-use shade, you expect it to come out just right without having to mix it yourself. Based on your description, your own instinct was actually spot on: it comes down to the base color and porosity of the hair. Freaky Olive is a warm, earthy green shade with a strong yellow/brown undertone. However, when applied to a very pale, almost-white bleached base, the hair lacks the natural warmth needed to anchor that olive tone. On a cool white base, the darker and cooler undertones in the dye tend to grab much harder, which turns the color into that dark, swampy tone you described rather than a bright, warm olive. On top of that, hair bleached to nearly white is often quite porous. Highly porous hair can absorb pigment unevenly, which unfortunately causes that patchy effect even when the strands are fully saturated. A tip if you want to fix or adjust it: If you ever want to give a ready-to-use olive another shot (or fix this current shade), washing it a few times with a clarifying shampoo will help pull out that dark over-saturation. Adding a warm yellow semi-permanent dye over it will immediately bring back that warm, vibrant olive green you were originally looking for!
